Sumatra Mandheling Gayo Grade 1

from $14.00

ROAST | Dark

TASTER’S NOTES | Dark Earth | Smoke | Deep Body | Low Acidity

SIZE | 12oz

We bring a dark roast on board this season for our deep, smokey coffee lovers. We chose a high quality Sumatra Mandheling Grade 1 coffee from a women’s owned coop in Aceh (Gayo) Sumatra. Sumatra coffee has a distinct flavor due to the traditional “wet-hulled” processing method limited mainly to Indonesia and the region’s incredibly fertile volcanic loam soil. Traditional Sumatran flavors develop deeper into the roast process. Look for earthiness, subtle smoke, low acidity, deep body, and an herbal aftertaste.

The Beans

Our Sumatra Takengon Ratu Ketiara Women’s Cooperative Gayo Mandheling Grade 1 is a single origin coffee meaning it is not blended with any other coffees.

Sumatra Ratu Ketiara Women’s Cooperative Gayo Mandheling Grade 1

Aceh, the northernmost province of Sumatra, is renowned for its unique coffee terroirs. The highland territory surrounding Lake Laut Tawar is characterized by fertile microclimates, traditional wet-hulled processing, and a long history of coffee cultivation harmoniously integrated into tropical forests. PT Ketiara, founded in 2009 by Ms. Rahmah, operates as an umbrella group in the region, fostering gender diversity and talent. Ratu Ketiara Gayo (RKG), established in 2017, is a women's cooperative within Ketiara, led by young protégés focusing on top-quality coffee. Over 80% of the people employed in the coop are women. Ketiara ensures quality control and logistics for its members, avoiding exposure to Sumatra's coastal climate during export.
